weymouth photo of the day – 13

if you happened to hear from the beer that logged onto my computer last wednesday,

you know I had a rather fun st. paddy’s.

got quite drunk

spoke to quite a few friends

and…

oh yes, got me a boat.

it’s as grown-up as I think I could get.

24-foot, sleeps 4 medium sized folk -

[which is great, as I don't particularly like tall people].

even one of those rain-telling thingys – which England really doesn’t need,

but hey.

it’ll soon be my home,

and transport.

and I just can’t wait.

needless to say, you’ll be hearing a lot more about her…

kind of a payback from having to hear about your kid’s birthdays and stuff.

tuesdays with tara – volume two

a quick look at the name

and a quick look at today’s date

will tell you I’m early,

but this track,

and this narrative

couldn’t wait.

sorry, Tara.

Being an intensely emotional person can have its drawbacks.  I operate in sharp bursts most of the time.  I get fired up, blaze a wild streak and then fizzle out, all at break neck speed.  Often if you blink, you’ll miss it, which is, you know, too bad for you;)

But there are certain areas of my life where I feel this emotionosity (hehe) comes in handy.  Give me any piece of poetry, from any era, and I will get to the meat of the matter for you. And songwriters the world over, I’ll be your muse.  I will tuck myself into your song and wrap myself up with the warm sweet blanket of your lovingly crafted lyrics.  I will!  And I’ll do it for free.  It’s a positive outlet for my emotionosity (are you feeling that word?).

For me the difference between a good song and a great one is easy to identify: a great song transports me.

Years and years ago, myself and a few of my music geek pals conceived of a mixed CD project for ourselves.  We each made an aural landscape CD.  Each song had to be accompanied by a small blur about where that song took us.  Example: for Beau, Interpol’s “Say Hello To the Angels” took him back to looking out the window of a speeding train in Germany at the frozen wonderland outside. Emotional journeys.  Music is full of them and made for them.

And THIS song takes me somewhere in time: New Years’s Eve 2000.  Big flippin’ deal all over the world.  People I knew were discussing where to go blow it out.  Jerusalem?  Istanbul?  Berlin?  But I was mourning a divorce and didn’t feel much up for partying. I had a friend whose family owned a small log cabin in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in Pennsylvania.

I made my way there, arriving just shy of nightfall.  I threw whatever I might need on my back, hiked through the apple orchard, crossed the creek until I found my small homestead.  Just me and a bottle of Jack Daniels, a whole mess of tears and a wedding dress that ended up in the fire.

In the morning, I awoke at the first breath of dawn.  I walked down to the creek, splashed ice cold water on my face, curled up in the nook of an apple tree bough, watched the deer nibble the dewy grass and began anew.

weymouth photo of the day – week three

are up here.

fantastic.

weymouth photo of the day – 12

there ya go.

this was last night’s offerings.

some might call taking pictures of food,

drink

and whatnot,

a little sad for St. Paddy’s,

but I had fun,

drinking and Facebook.

and mmmmm – the food.

‘bangers n’ mash’

it sounds funny to me to put that in quotations,

as I’ve eaten it, cooked it

so many times.

but I forget some haven’t.

so yes – ‘bangers n’ mash’.

or you could have ‘bubble n’ squeak’.

they’re both good,

although I prefer the former.

say what you will about British Cuisine…

fuzz.

this is a go-to film when I need a laugh.

and this is a go-to track when I need a quick laugh.

enjoy.

this is a pub. it’s not far from here. it’s a very nice pub, with good hand-drawn ales, if that’s your thing – it’s not mine. they serve wonderful cheese n’ onion crisps, which I enjoy. if you’re really hungry, they do a decent pie, but the gravy could be a bit thicker. in one corner is an old Singer sewing machine and on Monday night, it’s Quiz Night. I went in there once and sat next to a table of Americans, which kind of ruined it for me, so I talked quieter – if I wasn’t going to be the only one, I was going to be the quietest. as much as I love the States, I think I need to live near one of these. I’d like to meet my Dad here on a Saturday afternoon and ask him about drywalling. or girls. I like these places – you get drunk, but you don’t get drunk – too many beers? sure – most every time I come in. but there are no ‘shot specials’ or drinks with fruit, save for the Pimms in the summer. give us a pub any day of the week, brother, and I’ll be happy.

slàinte

do us a favor.

have a drink – a few of these, perhaps.

download any Pogues songs you could get your hands on.

become midly poetic and hug a lot of strangers.

repeat.

-

so, from one of the MacQueen clan – happy St. Paddy’s.

will share this, as shared with me from [another Irish-American] pal:

caith siar é agus ná lig aniar é — ‘drink it down and don’t let it back up.’

this is Weymouth.

it reminds me of Brighton.

you should read about Brighton.

mods n’ rockers.

and then watch ‘Quadrophenia’,

as it’s one of the better British movies ever made.

Sting’s best role – even more so than Dune.

and you’ll start to understand Vespa’s,

and The Who.

tuesdays with tara – volume one

I’ve kept Tara to myself long enough. started feeling bad and shit. see, I run with a large group that has insanely good taste in music. insanely. but only my b.f.f. Scott has opened me up to more stuff than she. am serious. so, starting today, it’s ‘tuesdays with tara’ – she’ll soon be on your mental redial. and Christmas list. I ain’t lying.

Tara lives in Istanbul. she writes about living in Istanbul.

she’s also scared of the Amish. which is nothing, if not understandable.

if we’re lucky, she’ll be here once a week.

-

I don’t live in America anymore, so I am usually not hip to the new shows until they bomb and make their way to the foreign market. We don’t have HBO as a channel, but we do get thrown the occasional HBO presentation bone, like Entourage.  My week isn’t the same without Ari Gold screaming at me.

Well, if you’re livin’ in America and lovin’ it, maybe you’re watching How to Make It in America, at least long enough to hear this here track, which serves as its theme song?  I don’t know your life.

This here’s Aloe Blacc and I suspect that may be an alias. Unless you are from Southern California, went to USC or happen to be familiar with an über obscure hip hop group called Emanon, you have probably never heard of him.

It’s not often that I burst out laughing to the point of fearing that I may have wet myself slightly when reading something from Wikipedia, but a fact from Aloe Blacc’s entry caused me to do just that.  Of course, if you are a USC alumnus, I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know.  To Mr.Blacc’s credit?  The song, “I love USC (and I hate UCLA)” sung to the tune of Biz Markie’s “Just a Friend” is apparently a campus legend. Needless to say, this is a man who is NOT taking a royalties check from HBO for granted.

So, yeah, Aloe, I’ll give you a dollar because I really, really want to hear YOUR story, for realz.

up! dates.

hi.

I’m well.

saw the photos of my soon-to-be nephew today and almost started crying,

but a good cry.

but it’s my little brother.

-

music, well, have had Mumford & Sons on repeat since being pointed towards it.

as well as this, a very, very dangerous track if you’re in a foul mood.

and a fantastic Blur bio was on last night which got me back into them – here’s a dangerous track if you’re in a great mood.

2 out of those 3 were brought to my attention by my gal, Tara Noble.

so good, in fact, she accepted my plea to have a weekly slot here called ‘tuesdays with tara’ – you’ll learn a lot, I promise.

also, a friend of my sister’s is running a well-versed site of his musical favorites – although, the big brother in me would warn any sibling of the dangers of those who own more than 2 Joy Division albums.

but…hey.

-

the cable went out today, which was good.

I’m not a huge television fan,

but am addicted to television.

‘Top Gear’ might be the finest show made today – and I’m not even a car fan.

I am a fan of Nigella, she calls to me.

shut up, she does.

and ‘Friends’ is still funny.

shut up, it’s good.

-

and life is good,

how lucky am I?

no money in Africa, fly to England and – hey! we need loads of work done. can you stay?

can I stay?

I love staying!

so here I sit in a 4-bedroom overlooking the ocean.

and will be paid, in a few months, in boat – more on that later.

more on other stuff later.

great.
