cairo to capetown – initial thoughts.

okay, so.

here’s the big idea.

I wanted to wait until I had a bit more time to talk it over with some folks,

but this is the last night I’ll be at Ryan’s – with his free wifi and beers.

a dangerous combination, usually, but hey.

I made enough, thanks to people like you, to get to Africa.

but I can’t just do a few pyramids and say ‘yep – been to Africa.’

I want to experience it in a way that only being poor could.

tourism, it’s all be tourism – just longer than most, I think.

I want an adventure.

so here it is:

cairo to capetown…with no money.

[the only cash I'll keep will be for internet access, as this depends on it - $15 a week]

no money.

overland.

quick – look at a map.

that’s a long way down.

and into some dicey areas.

Sudan? dangerous in places, yes.

even Brother Scott had a few words of warning for me about Sudan – and he’s the bravest cat I know.

so, a week or so ago, I wrote it off and was just going to try and find a few NGO’s to work with.

but it kept at me, this little thought.

and then there was this fantastic lady I shared a cab with who just so happened to have lived/worked in Sudan.

so I took that as a sign.

and I finally spent money I don’t have on the domain.

fuck me, I’m off topic and haven’t even explained it.

sorry.

no money, just asking, in advance, for friends-of-friends

or charities you might know

who’d let me show up, do a bit of work, or help get their message out

in exchange for a bite to eat, a blanket and a ride into the next town.

I might have to hitchhike.

I might have to have a few pages of phrases translated each place I go.

I might, as a semi-healthy white guy, get some funny looks when it’s me begging for food,

but I’m living proof to the kindness of strangers.

I’m living proof on how Facebook/Twitter helps you meet people.

and I’m living proof you need not be educated, wealthy, nor informed to travel.

this is the project I spoke with Nat Geo a few times about – still don’t think they’ll legally be able to do it.

and that’s okay, it was the confidence I needed to get me to the next step.

so – I’ve bought the site, and admitted it publicly.

and in a few weeks, I’m going to try and do it.

but will, once again, need your help.

we’ll start with the first three countries – who do you know in either Egypt, Sudan or Ethiopia who’d be willing to help?

what am I not thinking of?

what should I prepare in advance for?

and if you don’t think it can be done, tell me why.

Sounds like quite the adventure and oddly enough I might have some roundabout connections in Ethiopia. A dear friend of mine adopted an orphan from Ethiopia recently. I’m sure she has connections there still so let me ping her on anything like that.

Aric, i just had an ‘aha’ moment – there’s an Imam (religious leader) named Sheikh Shoaib, who is based in Cairo, Egypt most of the year, and here at a mosque in Santa Clara, Calif. the rest of the year. Guess where he is originally from?? OKLAHOMA. Born & raised there. Then, years ago, he converted to Islam, and divides his time btween Cairo & Santa Clara. Have not met him, but my dearest friend of many years, Nusrat, knows him well. He plans comedy get togethers for the teens here. I’ll obtain his contact info in Egypt, by tomorrow and FB msg. it 2u. Is there an email address that i can give to contacts with the Soroptimist Intl. org. in Egypt & Ethiopia, where they have local chapters? Merci. :)

Damn Aric, for all I know all over the world I haven’t got a soul in Africa other than Morocco, and I lost my contact from the Ivory Coast. I can ask a friend here from Zimbabwe if there’s any connections to other places, but I’m sad I have little to share. I’m excited to see you do this and succeed safely! But will be horribly distraught to hear of tragic things, so do be careful! (NOTE: I went as unafraid but cautious through some tricky parts of India unscathed so I support this adventure!) It’s nice to see some leads already! YAY!

If you were here next to me, you would have heard me take deep breath severeal times while reading this…
So here´s my two cents (for what it´s worth…):
the idea of getting around with no money (ok wireless lan money excluded) is ok and possible in nearly every country, you might have to walk distances you might not have thought you can do but it´s possible.
The idea of getting around without food and something to drink in Africa is a completely different thing, that can get you killed in no time and people who give you food might have nothing but give you everything they have even if it kills them!

Your way of getting from contact to contact is a realy good idea which can work out just fine, but make sure you take some dry food and something to drink each time you leave a contact and try to find trustworthy people who are headed in your direction, caravans where not invented without reason!

  5. insensitive says:

sounds irresponsible and bordering on insensitive…in a continent where much of the population lives on less than $1/day, where most of the countries experience political instability, economic fluctuations and failures, and some out-and-out warfare and genocide…wouldn’t it make more sense to give *to* africa and not take away from it? by free-riding, you deplete the continent of much-needed revenue. and it’s a well-documented phenomena that short-term ‘volunteer’ stints (even unpaid) for non-profit grassroots organizations deplete the resources of the institution more than contribute to it.

I too worry- but am learning to trust in you and your ability to be ‘there’.
Your journey will do more good for international relations than all of the wealthy men in palaces wearing suits.

guys – appreciate the support. means a lot.

‘insensitive’, while you’re coming across a bit parental, I do think you bring up some good points. obviously I’m not going to go about it by taking away from anyone, if they’re headed in the same direction, then sure – I’ll hope in the back for a ride, but I’m hoping to connect with ngo’s, missionaries, things like this to hopefully give a hand with whatever I can in exchange for a meal and a roof.

you mention ‘revenue’ but that would be tourist dollars, no? not what I have in mind – would I like an underlying message of ‘amazing place, fantastic people and safer than the propaganda we’ve been fed tells us? sure – same goes for Syria, which has the nicest folks in the area.

so yes, a few good points, but you’re also bordering on plagiarizing ‘dark safari’.

Hey, I know a few people in Africa I can connect you with. Mostly in Southern Africa but I can start with Ethiopia. Drop me an email and I’ll see how I can help you out. I’m not gonna preach here but can do so over an email! I am from Africa and have visited and worked in many places there. Let’s talk.
