guess what? I need funding for a show. but it’s a good show. [update!]

I’m starting to realize that most of my funks come from being stalemate. So I start a project – and this is one that I actually had in mind once I moved somewhere where I could set up a decent microphone, but decided yesterday to try something.

See – for some reason, a lot of people visit this site. I don’t know why, I really don’t, but about 1000+ a day…more when I get into trouble. So that’s a lot of folks.

Visits, I have. Funding for the new show, I don’t (had I brought my debit card down here to the beachside pub, I would have gone ahead and bought the domain name and told you the idea I have for the new music show, but I didn’t, so trust me on this), so I at least wanted to feel out our little community we have here.

Would asking $45 a show for sponsorship be too much? The portable mixer I need to get started while on-the-road runs $450, so if 10 people wanted to advertise whatever it is they do, or any cause they’re trying to get out, then I could get it paid for. This could be your business, your favorite charity, anything really (except religion or wicker – I will never back either). You’d get a link on the page and 3 mentions during the hour-long show.

O.M.K.O.S. was getting about 20,000 listens a month so it could be good. Or not. I don’t know, but was just thinking of a way to start on the show early.

It’s purely selfish, me going in early with this – I admit that. I just need something to do and this was something I’ve been excited about for a few months now. But I’m not going to get my feelings hurt if it doesn’t either.

Thoughts?

Is $45 too much?

Does anyone know of a better mixer that runs with XLR mikes?

Or am I an asshole?

Update! Funded!!!!

Show #1 – [S.O.S. Outreach - Vail, Colorado]

Show #2 – [Undisclosed Person - Los Angeles, California]

Show #3 – [Gregor Kaelin - Switzerland]

Show #4 – [Al - a cold and snowy England]

Show #5 – [Rz - undisclosed location]

Show #6 – [Michael in Madison]

Show #7 – [Louis in Vancouver]

Show #8 – [Alex, Metro Alum, Chicago]

Show #9 – [Erin, Tulsa]

Show #10 – [April, Baltimore]

…and we officially have a show!

I mentioned this in the comments, but I want to here as well – this meant a lot to me; the funding, of course, but also the support that so many have shown.

Show will start as soon as I’m back!

Thank you.

have a look at this one

It’s cheaper, it’s not a Nagra for sure, but for that range of price I think it’s a good choice. Try it and if the sound don’t appeal to you ,just change it, that’s the only way for you to know.

Here’s the deal Aric! You have a particular genius. You have a good voice. You can tell a story. It doesn’t have to be the best damned story ever, just a story. When YOU tell it, it is interesting, as opposed to say, an ad executive (or my ex boss, or some other non-story teller) trying to tell a story. His version will probably suck.

You have a voice for explaining things and situations, and enough intelligence to make it funny and engaging. You might need a couple other skill sets, and a mindset that lets you complete longer, tougher projects. But those things can be learned and improved. What you have at this time is talent for talking and writing. In this over hyped, over televised age, you can say things well. Most people can’t. You deserve to get rewarded for the skills you bring to the game, so find better things to say, and a better paying place to say them!

seb – appreciate that, man, but I need proper mike hookups to for the input, as I’ll be doing this from everywhere.

Rz – ‘and a better paying place to say them’, and lose coming into comments like this? no way. those 2 paragraphs meant more to me than you know. thank you.

    Hi,
I visit your blog because you’re travellling everywhere and I’m not!! I like travel writing, and like your stuff because you’ve gone out there and done it yourself.

Couple of thoughts, I’m working on something similar (in an unrelated field), trying to turn my ‘hobby’ into an income

“See – for some reason, a lot of people visit this site. I don’t know why, I really don’t, but about 1000+ a day…” why not find out why – poll your audience, find out what you’re doing that works and work on it!? Rather than asking us if $45 is too much, ask us what you could provide that would make people hand over their cash…
    Good luck.

    Hey Aric.
Great idea. I’m missing your shows anyhow. So count me in for show three and the 45 will come with other we agreed on. Why? I just like the stuff you do. You pissed off the Chinese authorities with your Shanghai show and you entertained me enormously with your Exile diaries. You’ve got the looks and you’ve got a great voice for radio or tv/vlog plus you’ve got that funky kind of something, that “je ne sais quoi”, that makes people interested and intrigued. I believe you should have an even greater audience than you have here and you might even get that, come time.
    Greg (anxiously anticipating carnival :-)

  6. Al says:

    Hey Aric,

The PMD660 does have XLR mic inputs and +48V phantom power, so I guess it already fits your needs, manufacturer’s link

    http://www.d-mpro.com/users/folder.asp?FolderID=3629

I’ve followed you on and off from the ChinesePod days, and as the other posters have said, you do have a unique contribution to make to the world, you maybe haven’t found your moment yet. Whilst a true artist probably shouldn’t make compromises, just maybe you’d get a bit further if you did now and again? We all get to have a boss at some point and sometimes we don’t agree with every decision that gets made, but I can’t complain about the result of the choices and compromises I’ve made over the years.

Any audio-related questions, just ask it’s what I do for a living.

Count me in for $45.00, does PayPal work for you?

Cheers from a cold and snowy England.

    Al

  7. Ken says:

Rz – I agree totally. Admin – listen to them thar words.

  8. Al says:

    Hey Aric,

Scanning through the other Marantz portable recorders, actually the newer PMD661 looks might be a better long term investment as it uses SD & SDHC cards rather than the older Compact Flash cards.

    http://www.d-mpro.com/users/folder.asp?FolderID=4405&CatID=19&SubCatID=188

Although at $599.00 on Amazon you’ll need to make some more podcasts! Your choice, the PMD660 will be just fine for now, which is probably the important thing. You can get cards up to 32GB with both SDHC and Compact Flash.

    Cheers,

    Al

    guys.

the fact that you’ve taken the time to write advice and kind, encouraging words means a lot to me – I meant that. to think that some have checked in occasionally since the CPOD days means a lot as well.

    I appreciate that.

Greg – I look forward to buying you a big beer in a few days time. you’ve gotten me through exile, taught me how to ride a motorbike and sent me to the finest people in SE Asia. and now this.

Al – let me check out the link. is the only big difference the SD card capability? I don’t foresee recording any 30 minute (straight), but here’s an audio question (you’ll soon be sorry you offered your expertise!):

on a, say, 4gig card, how much good (but not top quality, as it’s going to have to be compressed for online listening) sound could I get? I’ve never recorded sound straight to SD card.

    (where in England, btw?)

Ken – how can I argue with a scientist? thanks, man. I’ll heed that learnin’.

I’m almost halfway there, this is exciting.

thanks again – to all of ya.

    Okay. $45.00, I’m in.

  12. Aric – check your paypal inbox. You’re now a wee bit closer. Cheers

    wow.

  14. Ken says:

That’s right aric, you can’t argue with a scientist.

  15. ap says:

Where do I fund your show? How do I deliver funds to you…you had me at “those eyes…”

  16. erin says:

guess what? i just learned how to use pay pal. which means you got more funds.;)

  17. admin says: (Author)

oh nice! thanks, gal – and when I see you next, we’ll brainstorm on what you just wrote me about (artists platform). easily done!
