I started something…

Which a lot of people told me not to – but it was a conversation with Collin, a friend of mine who’s quite a high-ranking media guy when I decided to release this.

My father, upon me leaving to travel almost 10 years ago, asked only this: ‘Live, Love, Learn and Leave a Legacy’. As much as I loved ChinesePod, The Shanghai Show, etc, I feel the need to document life here from an objective angle. Yes, shit’s hitting the fan, but no, it’s not all protrayed correctly in Western media.

This is the second (first one is still being touched up by Current TV), of what I hope will be quite a few ‘Shanghai Diaries‘.

If I turn up on your doorstep, you’ll know why.

Aric, I had a similar experience during that incident with the American recon plane and the Chinese fighter. I actually faked an Italian accent with broken English a couple of times when things got hairy (thanks for being Italian, Mom) but things calmed down as quickly as they had started up, and since I didn’t live in China but was only there for a two week visit, by my next trip it was over. With this situation, it doesn’t seem to matter what part of the west you’re from, you’re all labeled under the same brand, and there won’t be any break until after the Olympics.

I really appreciate your using this format to convey the situation there. It’s not just informative, but I could see the emotion in your face as you let us know what daily life is like these days. Hang in there and good luck!

Flaneur, being French, you’re probably under even more pressure. Take care of yourself… I’d guess you’re avoiding Carrefour for awhile.
